This isn't a checkerboard. It's a Mi Grid.

THEFINALCURE. MI GRID 01 draws inspiration from the traditional Mi-Character Grid, a guide system used in Chinese calligraphy and character-writing practice.

The original writing grid divides a square with vertical, horizontal and diagonal guidelines, helping the writer understand proportion, balance, direction and placement.

THEFINALCURE. takes that familiar structure out of its original context and reconstructs it as a repeating graphic language for footwear.

Rather than using simple alternating blocks found in a conventional checkerboard, each square contains its own internal geometry. Repeated across the canvas upper, the pattern creates a visual rhythm that feels familiar from a distance, yet reveals a completely different structure up close.

Deep verdant green is paired with natural off-white, giving the graphic a slightly vintage character while keeping the geometry clear and precise.

The result is not a variation of an existing checkerboard.

It is an original pattern system created by THEFINALCURE.

THE MI GRID

The Mi-Character Grid is traditionally used as a structural guide when practicing Chinese characters.

Its intersecting vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines divide the square into multiple reference sections, helping establish proportion and balance during writing.

For MI GRID 01, THEFINALCURE. abstracts this structure and turns it into a repeat pattern.

What began as a tool for organizing written characters becomes a graphic system of its own.

ORIGINAL DESIGN

MI GRID is an original graphic concept developed by THEFINALCURE.

Inspired by the structural principles of the traditional Mi-Character Grid, the pattern has been redesigned, simplified and repeated specifically for footwear.

It is not a reproduction of traditional practice paper and is not based on a standard checkerboard print.
